“Questioned 僞撰か” STATUS
In the Text Table below, some texts will be marked as: “Questioned 僞撰か” in the “English Title + STATUS” column. This means that modern scholarship has raised questions in one form or another, about the authorship of the work in question.
NEVERTHELESS, the contemporary Tendai tradition maintains a ‘conservative position’ on these works, meaning that they are still treated as the works of Master Saichō 最澄, while noting the “challenged” status. This is evidenced not least in their continued inclusion, within the Collected Works of Dengyō Daishi Saichō 傳教大師全集.
Furthermore, any reader of these texts who is also a Tendai Buddhist, is advised not to treat the “Questioned 僞撰か” status, as grounds for discounting the text and its content. This is because, the list of texts herein contained, were those traditionally held to be ascribable to Saichō, his disciples, or teachers. When reading later Tendai materials, or the materials of other later Japanese Buddhists then, these works will most often be accepted as legitimate. And therefore, they’re crucial to an understanding of Japanese Tendai, regardless of whether or not they are indeed, the works of Dengyō Daishi Saichō 傳教大師 最澄.
