| On the third day of the ninth month of the thirteenth year of Enryaku (794 A.D.), an Offering [Service was held], with Zenshū of the Southern Capital (i.e. Nara 奈良) as Officiating Master (dōshi). Dengyō Daishi [Saichō] himself made offerings [at the ceremony], and he remained in participation for the first seven days. On that ninth day (i.e. the last of his seven days in participation) in the hour of the tiger (4-6 a.m), [he] completed his involvement [in the ceremony]. | Saichō asked: “By abiding in what state of mind, may one read and recite the Dharma Flower [Sūtra]?” Venerable Daosui responded by saying: “In just the same manner as all the Buddhas of the three times have expounded the Dharma, I now too, in this same way expound, the Dharma that is without distinction.” Saichō [then] asked: “What is the Dharma that is without distinction?” Venerable Daosui responded by saying: “All dharmas have the characteristic of Quiescent Extinction, and cannot be expressed in words.” Saichō asked: “What is the characteristic of Quiescent Extinction?” And Venerable Daosui responded by saying: “[It is the] seeing, hearing, realising and understanding that is without obstruction, of the sounds, smells, flavours, and sensations that are the Eternal Samādhi ” | 最澄問曰。住何心地可讀誦法華耶。道邃和尚答曰。如三世諸佛説法之儀式。我今亦如是説無分別法。最澄問曰。何無分別法。和尚答曰諸法寂滅相。不可以言宣。最澄問曰。何寂滅相。和尚答曰。見聞覺知無障礙聲香味觸常三味。 | 最澄問曰: “住何心地,可讀誦法華耶?” 道邃和尚答曰: “如三世諸佛説法之儀式,我今亦如是説, 無分別法。” 最澄問曰: “何無分別法?” 和尚答曰: “諸法寂滅相,不可以言宣。” 最澄問曰: “何寂滅相?” 和尚答曰: “見、聞、覺、知,無障礙; 聲、香、味、觸,常三昧。” |
