The Great Master of Hiei was named ‘Saichō’. He ascended [that] mountain in the seventh month of the fourth year of Enryaku (785 A.D.), and took up residency there for sixteen years. [But] his reputation reached the heavens, [and so] he was appointed as [one of] the Ten [Court] Meditation Masters (内供奉十禪師).   In the twenty-third year [of Enryaku] (804 A.D.) he received the decree to enter the Tang [Empire], and in the twenty-fourth year (805 A.D.), he returned home.   On the twenty-sixth day of the first month of the twenty-fifth year (806 A.D.), there came the edict granting the annual ordinands to the Seven Schools (with the Tendai School [being allocated] two individuals within this).   Finally at the beginning of the Kōnin era (810 A.D.), the the [Monastic] Affairs Ministry began carrying out the ordinations of the Tendai School’s ordinands. And on the fourth day of the sixth month of the thirteenth year [of Kōnin] (822 A.D.), the Great Master [Saichō] passed away (at 56 years of age).   On the twenty-sixth day of the second month of the fourteenth year (823 A.D.), the name of Hieizanji was changed to Enryakuji.
