| [(先 總禮伽陀) First, A Gāthā of Comprehensive Veneration]: The [sentient being] that worships and the [Buddha] that is worshipped, [both] have emptiness (śūnyatā) as their nature; They’re inherently not-two (advaita) and yet two! O this difficult to cognise and describe nature of my mind, is like the Jewel in Indra’s [Net]; For the Three Jewels manifest within my heart! | 能禮所禮性空宿不二而二。難思議我此心性如帝珠。三寶影 現我心中。 | 能禮、所禮,性空; 宿不二而二! 難思議我此心性如帝珠。 三寶影現我心中! |

| Make the invocation by saying: O Triple Jewel of Single Essence; Which Perfectly Pervades the Dharmadhātu; [And yet] softens its light to manifest as the Avatar Sannō! The Entreaty [which follows from] here [onwards,] is not based on the [Full] Standard Protocols [for invoking Sannō]. But rather, should be taken as the daily (or regular) invocation [of the Deity], which entails a summary exaltation of it. | 敬白言圓融法界一躰三寶。垂迹和光山王權現。今此講演。不依常儀。爲致日日稱揚。所畧細之讚嘆也。 | 敬白言: 圓融法界一躰三寶,垂迹和光山王權現。 今此講演,不依常儀。爲致日日稱揚,所畧細之讚嘆也。 |
| That is to say, it is a condensation of the [vast] powers of the Seven Shrines [of Sannō] into a single moment; and a prayer for siddhi (here meaning ‘attainment’) during the two times [of the present life and the hereafter,] in a single word. | 所謂縮七社功能於一時。祈二世悉地於一言。 | 所謂: 縮七社功能於一時;祈二世悉地於一言。 |
| [ENTREAT SANNŌ AS FOLLOWS]: O Avatar Sannō (Sannō Gongen), who is the manifestation of the Three Tathāgatas and the Four Bodhisattvas! [Your] Three Shrine [Groupings] of Ōmiya (Nishi hongū 西本宮 ), Ninomiya (Higashi hongū 東本宮 ) and Shōshinji (Usa no miya 宇佐宮 ), [are none other than] the Three Buddhas of Śākyamuni, Bhaiṣajyaguru and Amitābha! If one has not first [appreciated] the inexhaustible kindness that is the Honoured One Śākyamuni’s appearing in the world, then how could they [possibly come to] comprehend the inconceivable beneficence of Amitābha and Bhaiṣajyaguru!? For it is the Śākyamuni who diverts us away from this world, and it is Amitābha who comes to welcome us from that world. And it is merely the case that those whose karma is not yet certain, rely upon the pledge of the Twelve-Vow King [Bhaiṣajyaguru], and are entrusted to the guidance of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas. The Five Aeons [of deliberation undertaken by Dharmākara], the Ten Thought-moments, and the Original Vow [of Amitābha] are the blessings of [these] Three Buddhas of Single Essence. Who could there be, who does not accept this!? | 夫山王權現者。三如來四菩薩之應作也。大宮二宮聖眞子三社者。釋迦藥師彌陀三佛也。若不預釋尊出世之無窮恩徳者。爭知彌陀藥師難思之利益。釋迦自此土撥遣。彌陀自彼刹來迎。但其業未定者。依十二願王之誓約。預八大菩薩之引接。五劫十念本誓三佛一體利益。誰是不信受。 | 夫山王權現者,三如來、四菩薩之應作也! 大宮、二宮、聖眞子,三社者,釋迦、藥師、彌陀,三佛也! 若不預釋尊出世之無窮恩徳者,爭知彌陀、藥師難思之利益!? 釋迦自此土撥遣,彌陀自彼刹來迎。但其業未定者,依十二願王之誓約,預八大菩薩之引接。五劫、十念、本誓,三佛一體利益。誰是不信受!? |
| [Your other] Four Shrine [Groupings] of Hachiōji (Ushiō no miya 牛王宮 ), Marōdo (Shirayama no miya 白山宮 ), Jūzenji (Juge no miya 樹下宮 ) and Sannomiya 三宮 [are none other than] the Four Bodhisattvas of Thousand Armed [Avalokiteśvara] (Sahasrabhuja-sahasranetra), Eleven Faced [Avalokiteśvara] (Ekādaśamukha), Kṣitigarbha and Samantabhadra! They are the Fearless Mahāsattva of the Sahā [World,] able to transform [beings during the] Defiled Latter Age; and they are the incarnations of the Ten Vow King [Samantabhadra], who is the embodiment of the realisation that is the True Characteristic of the One Vehicle! Each one assists in the transformative work of the [aforementioned] Three Noble Ones (i.e. Śākyamuni, Bhaiṣajyaguru and Amitābha). Firmly seated within the Eastern Cave on [Mount] Shimyō (i.e. Mount Hiei) [you grant] boundless prayers in the present, and with the divine protection of the Seven Shrines, you bestow the preliminary-benefit (萬歳 ) of long life ( 花報 ). And in times to come, [you will lead beings to] the awakening of the Three Knowledges (trividyā), reward [those who] repeatedly cultivate the One Vehicle, and carry them over to be lotus-born among the Nine Grades [of the Western Pure Land]. | 八王子客人十禪師三宮四社者。千手・十一面・地藏・普賢四菩薩也。或娑婆無畏大士濁世末代能化也。或十種願王垂迹。一乘實相之證體也。各爲助三聖之行化。鎭令坐四明之東洞現世無邊之願望。依七社之冥助感萬歳花報。當來三明之覺悟。酬一乘之薫修。乘九品眞蓮。 | 八王子、客人、十禪師、三宮,四社者,千手、十一面、地藏、普賢,四菩薩也。 或娑婆無畏大士,濁世末代能化也;或十種願王垂迹,一乘實相之證體也。各爲助三聖之行化。 鎭令坐四明之東洞,現世無邊之願望,依七社之冥助,感萬歳花報。當來三明之覺悟,酬一乘之薫修,乘九品眞蓮。 |
| [(迴向伽陀) In closing, [A Gāthā for the Dedication of Merit]: [May there be]: Great Peace upon the Whole World; Tranquil Stillness upon the Four Seas; Peace and Tranquility within the monasteries; Rich devotion before the Gods; Security within the home; Happiness for all beings; And throughout the Dharmadhātu, May all be equally blessed. All the Buddhas as the Saviors of the World, Abide in their Great Supranormal Penetrations (abhijñā). And in order to give joy to sentient beings, Manifest infinite Supranormal Abilities (abhijñā).
