This edict states:   The Ācārya Saichō long resided upon the Eastern Mountain. And having already probed the obscure meaning of the Dharma Flower [Sūtra], [he will now] race across the western sea to hear the transmission of the Tiantai teachings and texts [in person]. However, his departure and his return must not exceed the [agreed upon] time period.	勅曰。最澄闍梨。久居東山。既探法華奧旨。早踰西海。宣傳天台教文。唯其往還。不得 過期。	勅曰： 最澄闍梨，久居東山，既探法華奧旨，早踰西海，宣傳天台教文。唯其往還，不得過期。
