The present tract contains a short-form of the Tiantai lineage contained in Saichō’s central lineage document, the Naishō Buppō Sōjō Kechimyaku Fu 内證佛法相承血脈譜.

| The Tathāgata Śākyamuni entrusted this Dharma of the Unsurpassed Mahāyāna to Mahākāśyapa. The Buddha said [to him]: “I entrust the transmission of this Profound Dharma to you. After [My] extinction, you should honour and obey My wishes (lit. | Mahākāśyapa received the Buddha’s transmission, and entrusted the Dharma to Ānanda. Ānanda entrusted it to Śaṇavāsa. Śaṇavāsa entrusted it to Upagupta. Upagupta entrusted it to Dhṛtaka. Dhṛtaka entrusted it to Miccaka. Miccaka entrusted it to Buddhanandi. Buddhanandi entrusted it to Buddhamitra. Buddhamitra entrusted it to The Bhikṣu Pārśva. The Bhikṣu Pārśva entrusted it to Puṇyayaśas. Puṇyayaśas entrusted it to Aśvaghoṣa. Aśvaghoṣa entrusted it to The Bhikṣu Kapimala. | The Bodhisattva Nāgārjuna comprehended the Essence of the Dharma of the Mahāyāna. And he encapsulated the [entire] Pañcaviṃśati in [his Three] Knowledges in a single [thought] (i.e. a contraction of: 一心三智 ), and summed up the Sublime Dharma in the Three Truths. Sūryasoma received this Sublime Quintessence, and entrusted it to Tripiṭakācārya Kumārajīva. [In order to] transmit this Sublime Dharma, Master Kumārajīva came to China (Cīna) and propagated the Dharma to Fu Dashi (Fuxi 傅翕) of the Shuanglinsi Temple, who profoundly understood the deep meaning of the Sublime Sūtra. [Great Master] Tiantai Zhizhe [Zhiyi] received that Dharma Stream. Because Dhyāna Master Qigao Huiwen had apprehended the Subtle Quintessence of [Nāgārjuna’s] Upadeśa-text, [his disciple] Nanyue Huisi [was able to] transmit this Sublime Text [to his own student Zhiyi]. [Therefore, the Great Master] Tiantai Zhizhe [Zhiyi,] received [both] of these Noble Transmissions, and understood the Deep Essence of the Three Trainings of the Ekayāna. | 龍樹菩薩得大乘法要。惣大品於一智。了妙法於三諦。須利耶蘇摩受彼妙旨。付羅什三藏。傳其妙法什師來晨旦弘法雙林寺傳大士深解妙經之深義。天台智者受彼法流。齊高惠文禪師故得論文之幽旨。南嶽惠思傳此妙文。天台智者大師禀受彼二聖之付囑而解一乘三學之玄旨。 | 龍樹菩薩,得大乘法要。惣大品於一智,了妙法於三諦。 須利耶蘇摩,受彼妙旨,付羅什三藏。 傳其妙法什師來晨旦,弘法雙林寺傳大士,深解妙經之深義。 天台智者,受彼法流。 齊高惠文禪師,故得論文之幽旨,南嶽惠思傳此妙文。 天台智者大師,禀受彼二聖之付囑,而解一乘三學之玄旨。 |
| [Zhiyi] bestowed [this] upon Great Master Guanding. Guanding entrusted it to Dhyāna Master Zhiwei. Dhyāna Master Zhiwei bestowed it upon Dhyāna Master Huiwei. Dhyāna Master Huiwei entrusted it to Dhyāna Master Xuanlang. Dhyāna Master Xuanlang bestowed it upon Great Master Zhanran. Great Master Zhanran entrusted it to Venerable Daosui.
