Tendai Shu Lotus Teachings

Aiki Martial Arts and Tendai Buddhism

There are many ways to learn about and experience the teachings of the Buddha. Far from the belief that all Buddhism is about quietness and introspection, is a fact that Buddhism is also  an ‘active experience’. For example, the teaching of ‘Self and Other’ may be understood on a philosophical level, but may also be experienced on the physical. In this, the martial arts are, and have been, an excellent ‘Expedient means’ of highlighting such teachings. One need only to think of Japanese Kyu Do and its Zen applications and the famous Shaolin Gung Fu monastery in northern China as proof of this.

For over 40 years, Reverend Jiryo has studied, practiced and taught the Aiki aspect of Japanese martial traditions such as Tai Jutsu, Jo, BokuTo, Naginata and Batto in addition to a vast array of empty hand technique with over ten years experience in Japan.

In recent years, he has formulated short courses which combine some of these skills as a means of experiencing key Tendai Buddhism and general Buddhist teachings and philosophy in a practical, hands on way. One need not be involved in martial arts to attend these courses. In fact, it would be more advantageous not to be. However, this does not exclude the practicing martial artist. Attending a course can indeed enhance ones chosen martial art.

Applying basic Aiki principles, through movement and technique, some of the following aspects are presented on the courses.

1. Aiki and its universal application.
2. Aiki and In and Yo Musubu (Blending In and Yo)
3. Aiki, Self and Other.
4. Zan Shin (Inner / outer awareness).
5. Shin Ki I Tai (Mind and Body are One)
6. Ichi San San Ichi (One in Three Three in One)

The courses also includes minimal weapons (Jo/ Bokuto) practice, meditative practices, Teisho (Philosophical teaching) and discussion.

A course can be completed within a day, a weekend or  over a four week period and require between 6 to 10 students.
